GAITHERSBURG, MD – June 13, 2017 – The Institute for In Vitro Sciences (IIVS), a leader in non-animal test methods, marked its 20th year with the opening of a new state-of-the-art in vitro respiratory exposure laboratory. The 1,000 square foot facility expands IIVS’ non-animal testing services to include rapid evaluation of potential respiratory hazards associated with novel ingredients and chemistries used in fragrances, personal care products, household and institutional cleaning products, and a wide range of traditional and emerging tobacco products.
“As we enter our 20th year, I am pleased that our anniversary coincides with our expansion into research and testing programs for respiratory toxicology,” said Erin Hill, IIVS President. “We look forward to having the technology to gain a better understanding of the potential human health risks from inhaled chemicals and particulates.”
With HEPA-filtered conditioned air and precise control of temperature and humidity, the laboratory will meet rigorous regulatory and research requirements. Additionally, the air venting system effectively evacuates aerosols, vapors, chemical fumes, and combustion products during dosing and exposure operations while maintaining an energy efficient “green” footprint.
“The new laboratory provides industry and government scientists the opportunity to study the effect of inhaled materials on a variety of human cells and tissues – from rapid screening tests to highly customized investigations,” commented Dr. Holger Behrsing, IIVS Principal Scientist.
IIVS commemorated the opening of the new lab with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a 20th anniversary celebration attended by local government officials, industry supporters, and leaders in the
in vitro testing field.
“Twenty years ago we envisioned an Institute based on science that would provide industry with ethical and scientifically credible safety testing solutions,” said IIVS CEO, Dr. Rodger Curren. “I feel we have reached this goal and look forward to IIVS providing 20 more years of innovation and success.”
